I’m delighted to share two recent Piano-Yoga® features with Pianist magazine — a new podcast interview exploring the story and philosophy behind the method, and an article I wrote for the magazine about Piano-Yoga® and its approach to piano playing.
In the podcast, I speak about how Piano-Yoga® grew out of my own experience as a concert pianist and my search for a healthier, more individual approach to piano technique. We discuss the relationship between the hands, body and mind, and how greater awareness of posture, movement, breathing and alignment can transform the way we approach the instrument.
Alongside the podcast, I have also written an article for Pianist magazine, offering readers a practical introduction to Piano-Yoga® and an opportunity to explore some of its principles for themselves.
Piano-Yoga® brings together my classical piano training and experience as a performer with my work as a qualified yoga teacher. At the heart of the method is the belief that technique should adapt to the individual pianist and their unique physique — rather than forcing the body to conform to the instrument.
We also explore one of the most distinctive aspects of Piano-Yoga®: its approach to developing the hands. The method includes a carefully structured system for safely stretching and strengthening the hands, which has been endorsed by medical professionals, alongside techniques for improving posture, reducing unnecessary tension, developing concentration and managing performance nerves.
